As the cricket season draws nearer, teams ready themselves for the 2023 season. Here is a look at Saffron Walden Cricket Club.

Saffron Walden finished ninth in the East Anglian Premier League (EAPL) last season. They gained 230 points across twenty games and will be hoping for improvement in the 2023 season.
Across their twenty games, the Essex club amassed 55 batting points placing them third overall,
and gained 37 bowling points putting them fifth. They finished 17 points off eighth placed Bury St Edmunds Cricket Club but were closely followed by Frinton-On-Sea in 10th finished just two points above the seaside team. Across the twenty games they only won five, they drew two and lost twelve.
Coming into the new season, Saffron Walden will be led by a new captain as old captain, Ben Harris, stepped down at the end of last season. The club said in a tweet “Ben Harris steps down as 1st XI captain. SWCC would like to thank Ben Harris for a brilliant 5 years at the helm. Ben has done an excellent job, notably overseeing our promotion back to the EAPL and maintaining our position in more recent times. Thank you, Ben.” The new captain will take the reigns from Harris and have to try and maintain and improve on what he has built in the five years in charge.
Players to look out for in the Saffron Walden squad are Nick Taylor who was the team’s leading run scorer with 1013 runs last season. Taylor, also, got the highest individual score for the Essex team with 118 not out against Great Witchingham, a team they went onto beat. Taylor opened the batting and stayed at the crease for Saffron Walden’s 48 overs, hitting fifteen fours and one six in the process. Tom Goodwin got the highest strike rate with 150.
In bowling, Jade Deklerk toppled 35 wickets last season making him the highest wicket taker in the team. Matthew Jones bowled an outstanding 8/43 against Bury St Edmunds, another game they went onto win. During his spell, Jones managed to take the first three batters’ wickets totalling 32 runs between them. The only other bowler to take a wicket was Benjamin Harris. Ray Mordini got the best economy rate with 2.14.
